Families Program Recognized
as an exemplary, scientifically studied curriculum by the Office of Juvenile
Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the National Institute on Drug Abuse,
the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the US Department of Education.
The
Strengthening Families Program is a parent, youth (ages 10-14), and family
skill-building curriculum designed to: -
prevent
teen substance abuse and other behavior problems. -
strengthen
parenting skills. -
build
family strengths and communication. The
seven-week program is offered to 8-13 families with students in middle school.
The goal of the Strengthening Families Program, in addition to having fun, is
to focus on strengths and to help families grow together. Parents and students
meet separately during the first hour and family members meet together during
the second hour to practice skills and work on family projects. All
sessions are filled with games, skits, videos, and projects that encourage communication
and problem solving. Some topics for
adults include: - understanding
the stresses and problems of teens.
- deciding
on rules and responsibilities.
- ways
to show love and support.
Students
will learn how to: - deal with stress
and peer pressure.
- appreciate parents/caregivers.
- communicate
their goals and dreams.
There
is no charge to attend this program. Family-Child
Resources is pleased to offer the Strengthening Families Program in York and Adams
