| FCR Ambassador Program

FCR offers a wide variety of volunteering opportunities. Below is a partial list of current volunteering needs. For your convenience we have included a brief description of each volunteer area. Please feel free to direct any questions to Desiree Irvin, Vice Presidentof Marketing & Development, by e-mail or by contacting our office at (717) 757-1227.

Committee Volunteers

Development Committee: This committee meets the 3rd Wednesday each month from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. The committee is board driven and invites a limited number of community members to serve on the committee. This lunch group works closely with the Marketing and Development Department of FCR. The focus for this committee is to assist with the development of fundraisers, establish policy and procedures for the Marketing and Development department, and oversee community outreach coordination efforts for the organization.

Gala Committees: In May of 2008, FCR will be hosting our first Gala. If you enjoy planning unforgettable parties, then you'll really enjoy volunteering on one of the committees helping to organize the event.

  • Sponsorship Committee: The committee's task is to inform local businesses and business leaders of sponsorship opportunities for this special evening. The group will compile initial mailings and make follow-up calls regarding these sponsorship opportunities. In addition, the group will organize and plan the silent auction details. The committee meets as needed/once a month.

  • Entertainment Committee: The entertainment committee's objective is to secure entertainment for the evening. The evening for this group begins with the entertainment from the cocktail hour and rolls right through to the after-dinner dancing music. If you have a passion for the arts, or if you play an instrument, this might be the committee for you. This committee meets as needed/once a month.

  • PR/Marketing Committee: This committee spreads the word about the gala to the community. Through advertising efforts, printed media, FCR website, and news releases to the local papers, this group is a key component to hosting an incredible gala. You don't need to be in marketing or advertising to volunteer on this committee. If you want to try your hand at the ticket design, help to develop the program booklet, or maybe take the photos needed for the auction items, then this might be just what your looking for. This committee meets as needed/once a month.

  • Decorations Committee: This might just be the most visual committee FCR has! If you like placing a creative spin on party details and like to have fun, this is the committee to volunteer with. From organizing the seating chart, to selecting the table linens and center pieces, this group will set the precedent for the evening. This committee meets as needed/once a month.

  • Mini-Gala Committee: This unique and very different gala committee is organizing the entire planning of a children's mini-gala. The goal for this committee is to wrap up fun, food, activities, and learning into a very special night for children. If you would like to experiment with gala planning, but on a smaller scale, this might be the committee for you. This committee meets on the 3rd Monday each month.

Volunteering At Events

  • Jr. Volunteers: Youth who are required to volunteer for middle and high school requirements, or perform community service for other requirements, can lend a hand to help prepare for an event or perhaps volunteer at the event. This is a great way for youth to volunteer and help support their community. All youth hours are logged and at the completion of their required hours will receive a letter of appreciation from our agency. We welcome elementary school aged children to volunteer at events with an adult leader or parent accompanying them.

  • Adult Volunteers: We welcome moms, dads, grandparents, and adults in our community to volunteer at an event and help support the mission of FCR. You don't need to serve on a committee to volunteer at an event. Volunteer times are on an as needed basis and advance notice will be provided.

Knitting/Crocheting Volunteers

We have two programs that rely on the talents and passion of knitters and crocheters. If you belong to a knitting or crocheting group, and would like to help children and their families in need by making items such as the preemie hats, blankets, or infant balls, please contact FCR.
  • Our Early Intervention (EI) Program works with children from birth to the age of three who have been diagnosed with development delays. Through the talents of knitters and crocheters, pre-term infants and infants petite in size due to health issues are able to receive a hat to help contain their body temperature warmth.
  • FCR offers an In-Home Parenting of Infants Program for first-time parents and teen parents. Our In-Home Parenting of Infants Coach provides support to parents, and answers questions that help get the new family off to a good start. Parents receive the tools they need to begin communicating and bonding with their newborn. One way that we are able to accomplish this is through the family receiving an infant ball. By parents holding or moving the balls, this allows the baby to develop eye coordination and face recognition. As the child grows, the balls are used as a motivator for the baby to crawl and develop eye hand coordination.

FCR provides all of the materials needed for infant balls including instructions. We have several patterns available for infant hats and blankets.

Volunteering with Families and Children

In-Home Parenting of Infants Volunteer Coach: Interested in helping new parents get off to a good start with their babies? Why not become a trained volunteer coach! Coaches work with new parents to provide support and up-to-date information on infants' behavior and their ability to communicate with their parents. Coaches visit each family several times during the baby's first few weeks home from the hospital.

Volunteer Child Care Aides: FCR offers workgroups that are designed for parents with children ages 12 months to 18 years who want to improve their parenting skills. Parents will have an opportunity to share successful and not so successful parenting stories while receiving helpful ideas, prevention techniques, and resources to achieve their goals. FCR offers child care services while the parents are attending the workgroups. Child Care Aides are on an as needed basis with advanced notice of the number of children, ages, and any special needs or requirements.

United Way/Day of Caring Volunteers

Each year, the United Way of York County - through givealittlebit.org - offers local businesses the opportunity to volunteer at local agencies to assist with projects that otherwise might not be completed.

In 2007, the Day of Caring was extended to a week and provided companies the option of selecting the length of time, the day, the project, and even the agency for which they wanted to volunteer. With the help of the community, FCR was able to complete projects like painting, making buttons for a Bullying Prevention walk, and inventory tagging.

For more information on the 2008 Day of Caring and FCR's projects, please contact our Outreach Coordinator.

FCR Ambassador Program

The ambassador program offers our volunteers an opportunity to support FCR and our mission by communicating our programs with the community.

All ambassadors receive extended training on the programs offered by FCR and work closely with staff and program directors during the training.

Ambassadors have several options available when volunteering that will blend with their schedules and family obligations. Below is a partial list of areas where ambassadors have made a positive impact in the community:

  • Assist staff at local expos, health fairs, and community days.

  • Deliver media and program-related material to various locations throughout York County.

  • Assist with mailings, follow-up calls, photocopying needs, and gathering marketing materials as needed for community events.
